Week 5 Opening Drive News

Welcome to “The Opening Drive” where we give you a glimpse into the big sports stories from the Grant County area this past week.
A big name for the Marion Giants basketball program from the late eighties is in the spotlight again.   Holt High School in Missouri hired former Giants standout Johnnie Williams earlier this week.  Williams, now 39, was a part of the 1989 number one ranked Marion Giants Basketball team.  Williams says he left the business world to find his calling and it brought him back to the sport he loves.  Holt High School is in Wentzville, Missouri a suburb of Saint Louis.

In boys’ soccer, the Oak Hill Golden Eagles will be playing for a sectional championship tomorrow.  The team scored its first goal just two minutes into the match and defeated the Blackford Bruins four to nothing.  The Golden Eagles improved to 13-2-2 on the year and will face the Mississinewa Indians in the championship game at 5 p.m. tomorrow.  Oak Hill only has one sectional boys soccer title coming back in 2004.

The Marion Giants Boys Tennis team played spoilers in this week’s regional matchup against Delta.  The Giants defeated the Eagles, 4 sets to 1 on Tuesday.  The Delta Eagles had won 16 straight regional championships in boys’ tennis.  The Giants team went on to defeat Northeastern, 5 sets to none, to move onto a semi-state match against Angola.  That match takes place at 10 am Saturday at Homestead High School.

Week 8 of the Grant County High School Football Season is tonight and the Central Indiana Conference Champion could be crowned after tonight’s action.  The 7-0 Mississinewa Indians will face the 4-3 Eastbrook Panthers at Eastbrook High School.  If Mississinewa wins or Madison-Grant loses, the C-I-C Crown will go to the Indians.  Madison-Grant is also on the road as they face Alexandria.  Other matchups include Elwood at Oak Hill and Kokomo at Marion.
