Welcome to the opening drive! This is where we take a brief look at some of the big sports stories from this past week in Grant County. I’m Tim Decker.
We start in boys’ tennis where the Marion Giants will continue to chase a state title later this afternoon. The 23 and 1 team will face defending state champion Carmel at 3 pm in the state quarterfinal round at Carmel High School. The team has held high expectations for this postseason as the Giants only lost one player from last year’s team which reached the semi-state round. If the Giants are able to win, they will play in the state semifinal round Saturday and potentially the state final round later that afternoon.
In cross country, many Grant County teams will be moving on to regional meets this weekend after successful sectional meets. On the girls side, the Oak Hill Golden Eagles advanced after finishing second at the meet located at Logansport High School. The Eastbrook Panthers finished third at the Indiana Wesleyan Sectional while the Marion Giants finished fifth to earn the last advancing regional spot. On the boys side, the Oak Hill Golden Eagles finished second in their meet to advance. Meanwhile, the Eastbrook boys team finished third with sophomore Josh Neideck winning the race. For more information on when and where your team might run, check the IHSAA website at www.ihsaa.org.
Finally, the Grant County Sports Hall of Fame committee is working on completing the fourth ever and two-thousand twelve induction class. The hall of fame currently consists of 37 individuals or teams that have made an impact on Grant County sports. Hall of Fame President Rick Atkinson says the selection process continues to get more difficult as more information on potential candidates is uncovered. Currently the hall of fame has over 140 nominees to consider for this year’s class and is accepting more application through November 7th.
For WIWU sports, I’m Tim Decker.
