Interview Questions for Marion's Randy Sehy

It's hard to think that we're almost a month through this now as I'm preparing for my 4th episode of the season.  Here's a look at some of the questions and topics that Marion Varsity Football Coach Randy Sehy and I will be discussing on this week's show.

Listen to the show at 12 pm this Friday on 94.3 FM (Grant County) or www.indwes.edu/thefortress (worldwide) or check back here for the podcast posted after the show airs!

Week 4: The Windup Interview Questions: Marion High School Randy Sehy
I.                    Last Week’s Game
a.       The Giants jumped out to a quick thirteen to nothing lead in the first quarter.  How important was a quick start for a tough road conference game?
b.      Your team was able to capitalize on multiple fumbles by Huntington North.  How was the defense able to handle the Huntington North offense so well?
c.       On the offensive end, Giants Running Back Marcus Marble had one-hundred eighty two yards and three touchdowns.  How important was the running game in this matchup?
d.      The Giants defeated Huntington North, 32-14 to improve to 3-3 on the year.  With only 3 games left in the regular season, what are you taking from this game to apply it in the last third of the season?
II.                  This Week’s Game
a.       This week your team is on the road again this week playing at Anderson.  What’s the game plan for this matchup?
b.      In 4 years at the school, you have amassed an 18-19.  In what ways have you made an impact on the Marion Giants football team?
c.       Your team has scored 255 points so far this season which is #1 in the North Central Conference.  What has made your offense so effective?
d.      What makes Marion Giants football more unique than the other Grant County High School football programs?
III.                Other Grant County Matchups
a.       Earlier this week we heard about the Eastbrook football team forfeiting 3 games due to an ineligible player.  What are your thoughts on this situation?  Eastbrook hosts Madison-Grant tonight.
b.      Central Indiana Conference Leader Mississinewa hosts Elwood in an attempt to go 7-0.  How impressed are you with the Indians season at this point?
c.       3-3 Oak Hill hosts winless Blackford.  As a coach, how do you handle a match-up where you are heavily favored to win a game?  How do you keep players motivated?
IV.                College/NFL Questions
a.       The Ball State Cardinals are on the national stage this week as the team travels to play #1 Oklahoma.  From a coach’s perspective, how would your team handle this situation where you are undermatched, not favored, and on the road?
b.      We are about a third of the way through the college football season already but conference realignment is hogging the college football headlines over the games.  What are your thoughts on all of the conference realignment happenings in college football?
c.       We’ve heard a lot this past week about quarterback protection in the NFL due to Michael Vick’s criticisms of officiating.  Do you think that Michael has a point in saying he doesn’t get the calls that Peyton Manning or Tom Brady would?  Why or why not?
d.      The Colts have now fallen to 0-3 after last week’s lost to Pittsburgh.  Also in that game, quarterback Kerry Collins, who was signed to play in place of the injured Peyton Manning, received a concussion and is questionable for this week’s Monday night matchup against Tampa Bay.  Which quarterback are you starting on Sunday if you were Coach Caldwell: Kerry Collins or Curtis Painter?
e.      Week 4 NFL Pick’em (if haven’t got there…start at 17 minutes):
                                                               i.      1:00 p.m. Sunday – 3-0 Lions at 2-1 Cowboys – who ya got?
                                                             ii.      4:15 p.m. Sunday – 2-1 Patriots at 2-1 Raiders – who ya got?
iii.      8:20 p.m. Sunday night – 2-1 Jets at 2-1 Ravens – who ya got?

Week 3 Reflection

Another week of "The Windup" is in the books and I'm starting to get comfortable with how things are moving at this point.  I'm very confident at this point as this is something I'm really enjoying but I'm also making sure that I don't get too comfortable.

If you haven't had a chance to know what things I'm working on...here's a list of some of the things I'm doing each week:
1. Scheduling a Phone Interview with Local Sports Contact
2. Creating Questions for Interview
3. Recording Interview - Editing into 2 segments for Show
4. Write, record, and edit "The Starting Lineup" segment that starts the show at this point.
5. Write, record, and edit the "Fortress Sports Update" each week to keep the community in the know about high school sporting events.

That's just a small taste of the things I'm working on.  The bottom line is that I'm spending a lot of time in the talk studio each week.

One of the main things I'm learning is the idea of being a radio producer.  I'm in charge of all this and I'm wanting to make sure I'm airing a high-quality show that listeners enjoy and want to tune in to each and every week.  If at the end of the semester one person has enjoyed the show or gained some understanding of their team, then to me...that's a successful show.

I really didn't have any major difficulties this week other than just the weekly time balance battle.  As much as I would like to say I have a handle on things by the end of the semester, I know it will be a struggle.

Hours Update:
Total Hours This Week: 10 hours
Total Hours This Semester: 38 hours
Remaining This Semester: 97 hours

So, I'm about a third of the way through...and with 3 weeks in, I think I'm ok at this point.

What a great episode of "The Windup" this week!  I (Tim) want to give a special thanks to Jeremy Sharp who comes in each week to record the "Starting Lineup" segment.  Another shout-out goes to Mississinewa High School Football coach Curt Funk for taking some time out of his schedule to talk about the team's play so far and what he expects from them in the future.

Didn't get a chance to listen to the show?  Follow the link below for the full episode!

Interview Questions for Mississinewa's Curt Funk

The Mississinewa Indians are starting to make some noise this year as the team is undefeated through 5 weeks of Grant County High School Football.  Mississinewa's Coach Curt Funk took some time out of his schedule to speak with me (Tim) about the team's season and other high school football news.  Here's a look at the questions I am planning on asking him:

The Windup: Week 3 Interview Questions
I.                    Last Week’s Game
a.       Your team defeated Alexandria, 30-22 to improve to 5-0.  What does it feel like to have an undefeated team at this point in the season?
b.      On the first offensive play from scrimmage, your team fumbled the ball on your own 20-yard line.  And a handful of plays later, the Indians were down 7-0.  What was you telling your team after not exactly the best start to the game?
c.       The defense stepped up big allowing only 7 points for the majority of the game until 2 late touchdowns.  How was your defense able to handle an offense that scores over 30 points a game?
d.      Your team had another turnover later in the first half when driving down the field.  What was the message at halftime to get your team focused for the second half?
e.      Your team defeated Alexandria, 30-22 to improve to 5-0.  What does it feel like to have an undefeated team at this point in the season?
II.                  This Week’s Game
a.       Many of your games this season have been fairly close.  The Indians have won by an average of 16 points, which for an undefeated team could be considered a small margin.  How has your team been able to win these close games?
b.      You play a Blackford team this week that got demolished by Eastbrook last week.  What are some things you are focusing on for this week’s game?
c.       The Indians are tied with the Panthers and the Madison-Grant Argyles for the Central Indiana Conference lead at 3-0.  At basically the midpoint of the conference schedule, how much focus is your team putting on the conference race?
d.      I always like to ask this question with the coaches – what makes Mississinewa football stand out compared to other Grant County teams?
III.                Other Grant County Schools
a.       The other undefeated Grant County school right now is the Eastbrook Panthers at 5-0.  They play Elwood this week.  How impressed are you with the Panthers this season?
b.      CIC Co-Leader Madison-Grant is at home against Frankton for the team’s senior night.  How much impact does senior leadership have on a high school football team?
c.       Oak Hill goes on the road to play a much-improved Alexandria team. Your team has played both already this year.  What kind of game do you see this being?
IV.                Upcoming College Football Weekend
a.       Teams are jumping all over the place in the conference realignment shuffle.  There’s also been talks of 4-5 super conferences with over 16 teams.  What’s your thoughts on these schools trying to shuffle things up in the world of college football?
b.      #1 Oklahoma gave their head coach Bob Stoops a 7-year extension worth over 34 million dollars.  There’s also been talk of starting to play players.  How much do you believe money should be involved in college sports and why?
c.       #4 Boise State continues to be a top 10 school year end and year out but yet makes it’s home in Idaho.  How does Boise seem to be oh so good with yet Idaho not being a hot spot for recruiting like Ohio or Texas is?
V.                  Upcoming NFL Weekend
a.       Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Tony Romo came back into the game on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers with 2 cracked ribs and led his team to the win.  As a coach, where do you believe the line is for a player being too hurt to play?
b.      Safety continues to be a high priority for the NFL and the league is making sure the players don’t forget with fines, penalties and other consequences.  What’s the state of safety in football in 2011?
c.       Coach vs. Tim – NFL Pick’em Week 3
                                                               i.      Sunday at 1 pm – 2-0 Patriots @ 2-0 Bills – Who ya got?
                                                             ii.      Sunday at 4:15 p.m. – 2-0 Packers @ 1-1 Bears – Who ya got?
                                                            iii.      Monday at 8:30 p.m. – 2-0 Redskins @ 1-1 Cowboys – Who ya got?

Week 2 Reflection

Now that we are in full swing of the semester, my senior project is in full swing as well.  I'm finding a pattern for each week of things I need to do daily, racking up the hours, and producing a high quality product for Grant County sports.

One of the things that I'm working on each week that I want to highlight here is what I'm calling the "Fortress Sports Update."  This is a 2-minute weekly feature that I record on Monday afternoons that updates listeners on the upcoming high school sporting events in the area.  This is similar to the Fortress Featured Events segment we also update weekly highlighting the community events happening.  This part of my senior project was actually something that Sam Weaver, last year's student general manager, and Dr. Perry, my adviser wanted me to do last year.  I never came through with that but now I am.  It doesn't take super long for me to do but now that it is in the rotation, it allows listeners to tune into the Fortress and continue to get local updates on events happening in the community.

I'm continuing to learn the discipline of time management this semester.  Although I'm only taking 13 credit hours this semester, my classes are heavy on outside of class work.  I can connect this to my professional career as well.  Each day when I'm at the station I have to stay on track with the projects that need to get done.  Yes, I can socialize or what not with employees every once in awhile throughout the day but I need to stay productive.

I could not be more thankful for my knowledge with Adobe Audition.  This program is becoming my best friend as the semester continues as I write, record, edit, produce and everything else on this editing program.  I also am glad that my summer internship allowed me to work with it frequently so I can keep my skills fresh.

The major difficulty this week was making contact with my interview guests.  I'm learning the rules and skills of what I like to call "phone tag."  I must remain persistent with my guests in trying to schedule an interview with them but not be rude and annoying to them as well.  It's walking a very fine line in those things.

Hours Count:
This Week: 10 hours
Total for the Semester: 28 hours
Remaining Hours to Record: 107 hours

2 Weeks Done...many more to go...I'm remaining faithful to the semester that God has provided for me and trusting Him in all that I do.

Interview Questions for Madison-Grant's Beau Engle

Now that I have an episode under my belt, I have the confidence that I'm able to make it each and every week.  The only way that the show can get better at this point is fine-tuning.  I need to take the things that I already have in place and make adjustments to make them better.  With that said, here's a look at the questions I prepared for Madison-Grant Varsity Football Head Coach Beau Engle:

“The Windup” Week 2 Interview Questions for Madison-Grant Coach Beau Engle
I.                    Last Week’s Game
a.       The Argyles defeated Oak Hill last week for a 28-21 win.  What was the biggest factor in the tough win?
b.      From what I’ve seen in my experience watching high school football, there are a lot of teams that primarily focus on the run.  Your quarterback, Derek Durkes, had a 63-yard touchdown pass in the first half.  How involved was the passing game throughout this game and what kind of impact does it have on your offense?
c.       After starting the season 0-2, your team has now won 2 straight to get back to .500.  How have the Argyles been able to turn the season around?
II.                  This Week’s Game
a.       You return home this week to play the Elwood Panthers.  What kind of game plan do you have going into tonight’s game?
b.      Let’s talk about the defense.  They made some huge plays late to save the Oak Hill game.  What are some things they will have to take from last week’s game and use in tonight’s?
c.       I read online that homecoming is this week for Madison-Grant.  With homecoming comes all kinds of activities throughout the week, as a coach, how do you keep the team focused on the game?
III.                Other Grant County Matchups
a.       The Eastbrook Panthers have won 28 straight regular season games in a row.  They look to move to 5-0 against Blackford this week.  Just how impressive is this streak in high school football?
b.      The Mississinewa Indians look to improve on their best start since 1993 as they travel to Alexandria.  What have you seen in the improvement at Mississinewa?
c.       The Oak Hill Golden Eagles look to avoid a third straight loss this week when it travels to Frankton.  As a coach, how do you keep these young players motivated in the middle of a tough losing streak?
IV.                College Football / NFL Week 2
a.       Which team surprised you the most in week 1 and why?
b.      Which team disappointed you the most in week 1 and why?
c.       The Indianapolis Colts host their home opener with the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.  Let’s put you in Coach Caldwell’s shoes. After last week’s performance, what are you telling your team for this week’s game?
d.      Tim vs. Coaches Week 2
                                                               i.      1:00 pm Sunday – 1-0 Bears at 0-1 Saints – Who ya got?
ii.      4:15 pm Sunday – 1-0 Chargers vs. 1-0 Patriots – Who ya got?
iii.      8:20 pm Sunday – 1-0 Eagles vs. 0-1 Falcons – Who ya got?

Senior Project Week 1 Reflection

I can't believe it...but I've done it!  I've written, produced, edited, and aired my first sports radio talk show!  The emotions that are traveling through me after the show had aired were all over the place.  Excitement...relief....amazement...humble...thankful...and giving God all the glory.

My interview guest for this first week was Eastbrook High School's Varsity Football Coach Jeff Adamson.  Since I am a 2008 graduate of the school, I decided to start with my home school.  Mr. Adamson was very willing to do the interview and we had a great conversation about high school football and other sports topics.  I was surprised at how simple it was to get the interview set up and how Mr. Adamson didn't ask very many questions about who I was, what I was doing, and his part in it.  I would like to say that is because I explained myself very well.  That credit goes back to my summer internship with Star 88.3.  I learned a lot about professional relationships during that internship and am grateful to that experience.

There wasn't much difficulty in this first week.  All of the interview components went very smooth.  Recording the opening segment with Jeremy Sharp was quite easy as well.  There wasn't much scheduling difficulty at all this first week and I am extremely grateful for that.  While I would like that to happen each and every week, I know that there are going to be some weeks that will give me a little more stress than others.  I also think that all of my previous experience in my radio classes at IWU helped significantly in the production of this show.  I wasn't coming in blind to doing this and this show really is a culmination of all my experience and classes at IWU.  This first week really couldn't have gone any better.

Here's an update on my hour count:
Senior Project Hours This Week: 8 hours (primarily spent in the WIWU-FM studios - writing, editing, producing, airing, etc.)
Total for the Semester: 18 hours

I don't think I'm too concerned yet about my hours since I'm going to be doing this for 3 full months but they may not add up quickly so this will be something I continue to watch.

Keep checking for more updates on my senior project and show things related to The Windup on 94.3 the Fortress!

Interview Questions for Eastbrook's Jeff Adamson

As I'm prepping for the first show of the year, here's a look at the questions Eastbrook Coach Jeff Adamson and I discussed:

Interview Questions for Eastbrook Head Football Coach Jeff Adamson
I.                    Last Game
a.       Your team jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the first half.  How important is a fast start for your team?
b.      533 rushing yards.  That’s the amount your team gained last week.  How did your team managed to pile up so many yards?
c.       Senior Gavin Pearson carried the ball 17 times for 283 yards with 3 total touchdowns.  After losing 22 seniors from last year’s team, what impact do the seniors have on this year’s team?
d.      One of the big factors throughout the game was heat. I’ve heard the criticisms this week about your up-tempo pace like using the no huddle offense in such extreme conditions. What’s your response to that?
e.      Your team improved to 3-0 after defeating Frankton, 66-7.  We’re about a third of the way through the season now.  Where would you say your team is at as it heads into the middle portion of the season?
II.                  This Week’s Game
a.       This week you play Alexandria at home.  What are some things that your team is preparing for when Alexandria comes to town?
b.      This game will be your lone home game until 3 weeks later on Sept. 30th.  How much of a factor is the home crowd?  Would you almost consider this a must-win game?
c.       Alexandria’s offense averages 42 points a game while the Panthers’ defense only gives up 13 points a game.  What does your team need to do to stop the high power offense?
III.                Remainder of Season
a.       The Panthers are ranked #6 in the Indiana Football Coaches Association Class 3A Poll.  How much focus do you put on the rankings throughout the season?
b.      Eastbrook ends the regular season with 3-straight intra-county matchups at home.  What does the team need to do now to prepare for that stretch at the end of the season?
c.       In over 20 years coaching the team, you amassed an incredible 195-63 record.  How does Eastbrook continue to be ranked in the top 10 in class 3A, be at the top of the CIC, and win sectional titles seemingly year after year?
d.      Can you share with our listeners one thing that makes Eastbrook football stand out from other high school football teams?
IV.                Other Grant County Teams
a.       What other Grant County team is standing out to you at this point in the season?
b.      Which Grant County school has a tough place to play at?
V.                  NFL Kickoff Weekend
a.       What team do you think is going to have a huge year in the NFL?
b.      What is one team that there is just too much hype for?
c.       Indianapolis Colts Quarterback Peyton Manning is listed as doubtful this week against Houston.  What would be your advice to him and Colts coach Jim Caldwell as the team makes its final preparations this weekend?
d.      Let’s have a little fun here..what are your picks for the Super Bowl in February?
e.      Tim vs. Coaches – NFL Pick’em Week 1
                                                               i.      Colts vs. Texans – Tim/Coach
ii.      Eagles vs. Rams – Tim/Coach
iii.      Cowboys vs. Jets – Tim/Coach

I thought it would be cool to post these each week so people involved can get even a more inside look at what the show is all about.
