“The Windup:” The Opening Drive Week 2 News Update
We start our show with the segment we like to call “The Opening Drive.” This is where we’ll update you on some of the local sports news happening in Grant County.
We open the drive today with a look at high school wrestling where some Marion Giants seniors made it a night to remember on Wednesday. Five Giant seniors captured victory over their opponent and won the meet as a team over county rival Mississinewa, 62 to 15. The Chronicle-Tribune reports the Giants were victorious in the 106, 126, 160, 195 and 285-pound rounds as the team celebrated senior night in Marion High School. Giants Coach Heath Duke says he couldn’t ask any more from his team that has been plagued with injuries and depth issues all season. The win puts Marion’s overall record at 12-15 on the year and builds momentum for the team’s appearance in the North Central Conference meet tomorrow and then the Oak Hill Sectional a week later.
In women’s college basketball, the #1 Indiana Wesleyan University Lady Wildcats protected their home floor on Wednesday after an impressive 73 to 62 win over #25 University of Saint Francis Cougars. Things didn’t exactly look bright with 4:29 remaining as the Wildcats found themselves down one, 62 to 61. The #1 ranked defense in NAIA Division II locked down the Cougar offense by not allowing another point for the remainder of the game while going on a 12 to nothing run in those final minutes. Senior Center Krystal Stoneking led IWU with 20 points and nine rebounds. While Stoneking led IWU, the show belong to the bench as Freshman Guard Emma Stahl scored 10 points and dished out seven assists while Junior Forward Paige Smith posted 12 points and 5 rebounds. IWU improved to 20-and-1 on the year and a perfect 9-0 in Mid-Central Conference play. The Wildcats will look to continue their great play with a home match against Marian University beginning tomorrow at 1 p.m.
We finish the drive today with a local bowler making an impact in Europe this week. Ronnie Russell finished 22nd in the World Bowling Tour’s Brunswick Ballmaster Open. While banking over 6-thousand dollars with the finish, Russell is traveling to the west coast for a bowling trip. He’ll start with the Professional Bowling Tour’s Cheetah Open in Fountain View, California which begins today. Russell joined the PBA in 2003 and is just one of the 136 entrants for the Cheetah Open.
That’s going to do it for our “Opening Drive” segment this week. Remember to listen to the Fortress Sports Update airing throughout the week for your opportunity to catch some local Grant County sporting events.
(That was the actual script from the segment above with some help from our friends at the Chronicle-Tribune.)
