“The Windup:” “The Opening Drive” Week 5 Script
We start “The Windup” today with a brand new edition of our “Opening Drive” segment. This is where we highlight some of the sport stories making news in the Grant County area.
We start in high school swimming as four Oak Hill Golden Eagle girls are looking to make their name in the IHSAA State Meet this weekend. Melissa Ford, Samantha Mauk, Morgan Tinkel, and Kendall Drook will take to the pool in the 200 meter freestyle event tonight in the preliminary round of the state finals at the Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis Natatorium. All four seniors will be making their first state final appearance. The team is ranked 28th out of 32 teams and needs to finish inside the top 16 to make the races on Saturday. Oak Hill Swimming Coach Mark Yordy says the team can make it there if the girls hit their top times of the season. The Preliminary round begins at 6 p.m. tonight with the Oak Hill girls participating in the 9th of 12 events.
The postseason is here in girls’ high school basketball as the sectional tournaments began on Tuesday. The Oak Hill Golden Eagles were looking for their 4th consecutive sectional title but fell to Wabash, 40-34. Coach Todd Law’s team finished 16-5 overall and did win the Central Indiana Conference championship this year. Whitko and Heritage handed losses to Mississinewa and Eastbrook respectively. The Panthers finished the season 6-15 overall while Mississinewa managed just a 1-and-20 record losing their last 19 games. There are some bright spots for the county though as Marion and Madison-Grant advanced on Tuesday night. The Giants will play McCutheon while the Argylls will play Eastern in each team’s respective sectional semifinal round tonight. If either team wins, they will play in a sectional championship game tomorrow.
Finally in high school wrestling, one Marion Giant is headed to the semistate round for the 4th time but this will be the first as a regional champion. Senior Gabe Flores defeated Northfield senior Tanner Chamberlain via technical fall almost 6 minutes in the bout last Saturday. The 126-pound wrestler isn’t alone though as 2 other Marion Giants will be participating in the semistate round. Seniors Seth Lloyd and Nate Duke will join Flores representing Marion High School. The Chronicle-Tribune is reporting that the Oak Hill Golden Eagles will be sending 5 individual wrestlers as well….3 seniors and 2 sophomores. The semistate meet will take place at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
That does it for the drive today. Make sure you listen for the Fortress Sports Update airing throughout the week updating you on all the local Grant County high school sporting events.
(A special thanks to The Chronicle-Tribune for helping us out with the stories.)
