Argylls Defeat Warriors in Back and Forth Game

Holy smokes!  “The Windup” was at a local high school boys basketball game tonight!  Tim Decker traveled to Madison-Grant High School to see the Argylls take on the Wes-Del Warriors.  It was new head coach John Irwin’s home debut for Madison-Grant.

Junior Varsity Highlights:

We’ll start with the junior varsity game that was close throughout.  The Warriors shot a lot of deep 3-point attempts that just were unable to fall.  Meanwhile, the Argylls attacked the inside with 6’7” Freshman Tanner Wise and 6’6” Junior Jake Lemon.  The first half ended with the score…Wes-Del Warriors 11…Madison-Grant Argylls 13.  Wes-Del Sophomore Desmond Wilson led the first half scoring with 6 points.

As we move to the second half, it was a game of runs.  The Wes-Del Warriors outscored Madison-Grant 14 to 2 and the 3-point shots finally started to fall.  The 3rd quarter included an 11-0 run to start the 3rd quarter by Wes-Del.  We headed into the 4th with the Warriors up, 25-15.  The visitors didn’t give up though and kept slowing picking away.  Wes-Del started the 4th with a 10-nothing run to tie the game at 25.  The Warriors finally broke into the lead at 28-27 with just a few minutes remaining.  The final ended up with the Wes-Del Warriors 28…the Madison-Grant Argylls 30.  It was truly a great comeback for the coach Kevin Alsup.

Leading Players:
Wes-Del Warriors: Sophomore Desmond Wilson with 7 points and 8 rebounds.
Madison-Grant Argylls: Junior Brent Bugby with 13 points including 6 in the 4th quarter.

Varsity Game Highlights:
We move to the varsity game where Wes-Del Coach Joel Roush was squared against new Argyll Coach John Irwin.

The game was very evenly played throughout.  Wes-Del held a slim lead at 14-10 after one quarter.  Wes-Del once again relied on long jumpers while the Argylls focused on the inside.  The Argylls jumped out quick in the 2nd quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 19-14 lead.  Wes-Del came back strong though to send the game into the half with the Argylls only up one, 24-23.

We move to the 2nd half now and defense became a big theme.  The Warriors went scoreless for the first 6.5 minutes of the 3rd quarter.  Not good.  They came back strong though, going on a 8-0 run to end the quarter in those final 90 seconds.  Wes-Del was actually up one, 31-30, and had all the momentum.  The Argyll offense handled the charge by scoring 21 points in the final quarter.  Wes-Del couldn’t keep up and lacked defense in the late minutes.

Madison-Grant won the game, 51-44.  The Argylls improved to 1-2 on the year while Wes-Del fell to 1-2.

Leading Players:
Wes-Del Warriors: Senior Kameron Weaver with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Madison-Grant Argylls: Senior Tyler Young with 10 points, 8 rebounds, 5 of 11 from the foul line.
